Debuting a new guest columnist, our new Point-Counterpoint series will look at the current issues in mototsport, from two sides of the coin. This week it is the tyres, and Pirelli's opinion that a tyre war would be bad for the sport.

Marussia's test and reserve driver, the 32 year old Spaniard, Maria De Volta has sustained "life threatening injuries" in a testing crash at Duxford Imperial War Museum. The incident occurred during her first run in a modern Formula 1 car, where she was doing straight line testing for the Banbury based team. Scuderia Ferrari and Ducati have both halted work at their respective headquarters following the earthquake which struck the Emilia region of Itlay today. While neither factory was at the epicenter of the tremor, which measured 5.8 on the Richter scale, both companies felt it prudent to let their employees be with family. An office debate sparked a bit of research. One of my lovely colleagues is firmly wedded to the idea that Michael Schumacher is the best driver in the world. I on the other hand disagree, I tend to think, in the privacy of my own mind, that Hamilton is one of the best, if not the best. Those are the hypothesis. How to prove it ?

There are only 14 World Championship wins on the grid this year, and while we are comparing the talents of two top boys, it seems only fair, if slightly annoying, to compare Vettel, Alonso, Button and Raikkonen too.

The Williams team celebrations of their first victory in eight years was cut short today after a suspected KERS issue ignited race fuel in the back of the garage. The incident, which happened around 90 minutes after the end of the Spanish Grand Prix in which Pastor Maldonado claimed his first race win. Read more: Mechanics injured in Williams pit blaze.
